Teacher Training: Changsha
Being in China gives us the unique opportunity to take on talented children from the young age of 4 or 5 and develop them for the next 15-20 years from beginner all the way to concert pianist. For the student, they avoid the pitfalls of switching teachers every few years whenever they reach an unsurpassable bottleneck, as well as having to periodically unlearn bad habits they’ve picked up along the way. And for us, we get the privilege of observing world-class talent from crib to Carnegie Hall. While this occupies much of our time, I also feel it’s important to help the general teaching populace understand better how to teach, what works, what doesn’t and what really matters. That’s why this year, at the invitation of the Chinese Musicians’ Association, I’m going on a lecture tour of all the provincial capitals. I will present a two-day, 16-hour seminar on teaching children, especially how to handle the first 3-5 years. Here are some photos from the first stop in Changsha, Hunan.
